Pacific Coast Sun and Suggestion

As far as the material for these pieces I am hitting all of the main categories of censored material. hedonism-related, gambling, and this week, sexuality. There are many fruits and vegetables that can represent the human organ.

This piece was strange and very challenging in that the technique in this one is almost entirely illustration based. Perhaps it was my love of the sun that we have been seeing in these past few days but I became immersed in making the environments in this piece. Unfortunately, I think I fell short in a few areas, such as overall design and creating centerpieces. But I think of this as more of a collection of short stories to the novels of my two former pieces.

The overall result is soft and multicolored, more painterly and less graphic.

Late start this week. It looks like a Sun Bear but it is going to be a California Grizzly

Gambling and Chinese Contraban

I am very happy with how this turned out. Gambling is illegal in China and the even a mention of how much you enjoy feeding the meter could land you in jail, a labor camp, or a bathtub full of ice (because your kidneys have been taken). Ok, the last one is largely speculation--but if you speculate about illicit kidney trading in China you will land yourself back in jail (coincidence?).

In any case I took great liberties with the symbolism surrounding any kind of gambling. The tradeout propaganda statement, "Tomorrow will be better" is intended as a gross generalization of the ways in which we gamble in our daily lives (and was featured at the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Communism). And I am aware that the Maneki Neko originated as a Japanese emblem of good fortune--every culture has the possibility of being referenced in this project. Along with the Happy Cat I referenced, cards, the duality of the club and spade suit as positive and negative, lottery balls (portraying Chinese-censored numbers), and pachinko boards. The color is luck, affluence, the movement pattern of pachinko balls, and rainbow liquid shower.

The piece is four by 6 feet and best viewed at that size.

A new signature I'm trying on for size.

A deceptively simple looking Pachinko Board.

Number One: Lyrics of the Land

Much, much work went in to this as a conglomeration of techniques and I am very happy with the outcome, although the text treatment might change as it is art nouveau style dated and I am aiming for a less centralized, modern gridded asymmetrical layout. The statement within are both created from words that are and were censored in China and statements that came from a 60th anniversary of the communist party in China--Propaganda intermingled.

I think it would be helpful to explain my idea in greater depth. I am trying to create a commentary on totalitarian regimes and power discrepancies rather than a direct political statement on China. I want the poster to end up looking like some kind of interrogation episode in which the truth intermingles with a foreign idea. The pieces of propaganda that I am dealing with are perfect in their elevation of the ruling class, and the censored keywords are things that a free nation would express daily. I want their integration to be beautiful, strange, and abstract.

This might not be as apparent in this beginning piece as it was the one that I have cut my teeth on, using all the techniques instead of a few. But I look forward especially to the coming ones in which the layout in particular will be better planned.

Almost there. The text is verse created with words that are censored in China. All colors are patterns in using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Closeups upon finish. Also, this is the first piece of a series, I'm only going to do minimal process posts for others--it is just interesting sharing the maiden voyage of this kind of rendering.

I'm putting Illustrator through boot camp.

Commence the Patterning

I've chosen a direction for my final exhibition, I plan on using the concept of censorship and the heavily regulated state of China integrated in to our American state. I plan on designing sayings that have been created with data leaked from the socialist state.
I finally have a pattern palette that I am going to continue with, as well as a size--very large. I look forward to buckling down and making something amazing.
